An ingrown toenail is a painful condition which occurs when the corner of your toenail grows into your skin. Ingrown toenails are very common and can happen to anyone.  Usually the big toe is affected.  If you think you may have an ingrown toenail, schedule an appointment with one of our doctors, as the treatment depends on the severity of the condition.  Ingrown toenails can become infected if not properly treated. The goal of treatment is to alleviate pain and to prevent recurrence.

Ingrown toenails can be painful and cause swelling and redness around the big toe

Ingrown Toenail Q & A

  1. What is an ingrown toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail grows into the skin, disrupting normal anatomy. This usually occurs at the big toe, and causes pain, redness and swelling.  Wearing certain shoes may be very uncomfortable.

2.  What should I do if I have an ingrown toenail?

Please schedule an appointment with one of our board certified Podiatrists.  Some ingrown toenails require treatment.  If left untreated, an infection can develop. Also, this condition can recur if not properly treated.

3.  What is the treatment for an ingrown toenail?

Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and symptoms.  If mild, antibiotic creams and roomy shoes may be effective.  If the condition is more involved, the podiatrist may remove the piece of ingrown nail that is causing an issue.  This is a very minor procedure that is done in the office with some numbing medication.  There is no downtime.  Most patients feel better shortly after.

4.  What should I do if there is puss coming from my ingrown toenail?

Please see a Podiatrist immedicably as this likely means the ingrown toenail is infected.
